Doctors with Africa CUAMM is an international NGOs, based in Italy, established in 1950 with the aim of supporting developing countries in their effort to build sustainable and accessible health systems. The organization’s mission is to reduce the needless loss of lives in development and emergency contexts caused by lack of effective health care, and to contribute to improve health outcomes among the most vulnerable group of the population.

CUAMM, in collaboration with Regional Health Bureau, South Omo Zone Health Department and Jinka General Hospital is implementing  the project “Ensure access to quality Health services for mothers and children in the South Omo Zone” with the primary aim of improving the accessibility of maternal, perinatal, neonatal and pediatric services provided in the intervention area targeting Health Facilities and Communities.

Overall responsibilities of Position:

The Emergency Surgeon Officer will be responsible to support Tumi CEMONC in providing Medical Services related to obstetric, neonatal and pediatric emergencies and minor surgeries as per Facility schedule and organization

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Support to clinical work aiming to improve the coordination of the overall clinical services in collaboration with the Head and the existing staff of the Health Facility:
    • Clinical management of MNCH services in Turmi  CEMONC, with special focus on  providing routine Minor Surgery, Emergency surgery and Management of Obstetric, Neonatal and Pediatric Complications:
      • Support the establishment and/or the quality improvement of Pre, intra and post-operative care of obstetric complications requiring surgery
      • Support the establishment and/or the quality improvement of routine minor surgery services
      • Support the establishment and/or the quality improvement of Women services
      • Support and monitor the appropriate referral system to higher level of care and from lower level health facilities confirming appropriate diagnosis
  • Mentoring of the staff on the utilization of guidelines and training on the job:
    • Ensure the effective and quality implementation of guidelines and knowledge acquired during trainings
    • Establish regular Continue Education Sessions with the HC staff
  • Monthly report:
    • Support the HC staff in  the elaboration of accurate and quality HIMS reports on monthly basis
    • Provide regular, accurate and quality monthly reports and data collection on the implemented activities as per Internal Organization Reporting System
  • Collaborate with Governmental and not governmental staff to ensure quality service delivery
  • Participate to meetings and orientation trainings called by SOZHD, JGH and DwA CUAMM as per Area Coordinator indication/request
  • Participate to ISS conducted by SOZHD in Turmi CEmONC whenever requested
  • Any additional  assignment, according to the position, given by the Area Coordinator or Country Manager

  • Women candidates
  • Previous working experience in Doctors with Africa CUAMM INGO

Duty Station:

  • Turmi  CEmONC

Type of Employment:

  • Six (6) months with possible extension – 45 days probation

Reports to:

  • Area Coordinator

Job Requirements

Required Education & Experience:

  • The candidate must hold the MSC in Emergency Surgeon Officer with a preferable minimum of five (5) years’ experience in surgery clinical practice

Required Competencies:

  • Fluent in speaking English and Amharic
  • Experience in obstetric and emergency  surgeries
  • Experience in Management of Obstetric Complications
  • Experience in training and mentoring of Health Professional
  • Experience in monitoring and supervision of Health Services.
  • Excellent organizational skills and multi-tasking ability.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office 2010, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication, presentation and public speaking are required.
  • Strong interpersonal, motivational, networking and public relations skills.
  • Positive coordination and relationship with partners and other CUAMM staff.
  • Creativity, enthusiasm and a strong commitment to succeed.
  • Capacity to work in remote areas
